Two decades later, Pasternak would fall afoul of Party elite when his novel Doctor Zhivago included critiques of the Soviet Union and won the Nobel Prize. The Paris Review sent painter Olga Carlisle to Moscow to interview him in the aftermath of the controversy, known as the Pasternak Affair. Pasternak’s only wish, he said, was for free time to finish his play, Blind Beauty. But he died in 1960, after only writing a portion of the three-part play.
